Smallholders Monthly Guide

January February March April May June

The following monthly tips are intended as a traditional and general guide for smallholders getting started in central Portugal. Certain things I
will have forgotten to mention and for sure there are many more possible things to plant and ways of doing things.

As crop variety and planting times will differ slightly due to regional temperatures, weather and soil conditions, I would definitely recommend speaking to your neighbours. Over a few flower pots of wine in the ‘adega’ I'm sure you'll find that they will be a fountain of knowledge and more than happy to advise you on what, when and how to plant, who's got the best billy goat in the area and where to buy your chickens etc, (poultry, seasonal plants and trees are always available at your local towns weekly market).

Whether you are looking to be completely self sufficient or just wanting to enjoy a few quality home grown treats, with a bit of work, a smallholding in central Portugal can easily provide you with plenty of good fresh produce all year round.

We have always preferred to work our quinta organically which we feel strongly benefits both our family and the environment.
